Vacuum Switch

A vacuum circuit breaker is an electrical switching device used to open and close circuits in a vacuum. It uses vacuum as the arc-extinguishing medium, meaning when the breaker contacts separate, the current is interrupted in the vacuum, preventing the formation of an electric arc. Vacuum circuit breakers are commonly used in medium- and high-voltage applications, such as distribution systems and power plants.

Types of Vacuum Circuit Breakers

Vacuum circuit breakers are classified by voltage level: equipment for 6–10 kV and equipment for 35 kV.

These switches have three poles, each containing a chamber with a contact compression unit (tripping mechanism) and a spring actuator.

Based on installation location, switches are classified as:

• Indoor switches: used as part of complete distribution equipment

• Outdoor switches: used for open-type distribution equipment.

By design, vacuum circuit breakers can be: fixed type or withdrawable type.

Fixed switches can be used as standalone devices or as part of large automatic protection systems.
One advantage of fixed vacuum circuit breakers is their enhanced insulation capability and ability to operate under extreme temperatures (from –40°C to +40°C, with a minimum limit of –60°C).

Fixed switches are rigidly designed for permanent installation in a fixed location, such as dedicated racks or cabinets. This provides higher reliability and longer service life—over 30 years.

Withdrawable devices are used in complete switchgear assemblies. With a withdrawable switch, replacement can be performed without disconnecting the entire switchgear.
